The theoretical basis for traditional Thai healing is rooted in the belief that all forms of life are sustained by a vital force (lom) that is carried along invisible energy pathways (sen) running through our bodies. This energy force is extracted from air, water, and food, and it is believed that disease and dysfunction come about when energy becomes blocked along these pathways. Accordingly, Thai massage’s intent is to free this trapped energy, stimulate the natural flow of life force, and maintain a general balance of wellness. It offers a humanistic approach based on enhancing the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Treating the Physical Body

  • Increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.
  • Stimulates the lymph system, the body’s natural defence, against toxins.

  • Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles.

  • Reduces spasms and cramping.

  • Increases joint flexibility.

  • Reduces recovery time for strenuous workouts and helps eliminate subsequent pains.

  • Releases endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller.

  • Improves range of motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain.

  • Relieves pain for headache and migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication.

Treating the Energetic Body

  • Stimulates all ten major meridians.

  • Aims to harmonize the body, and loosen blocks.

  • Recoups deficiencies along the energy lines.

  • Stimulates the Chinese pressure points with healing touch.

  • Promotes the free circulation of life energy, or Prana.

Treating the Mind

  • Assists mental focus and performance.

  • Releases stress and fatigue.

  • Creates a personal sense of well-being.

  • Increases concentration levels.

  • Creates a greater awareness of one's self.

  • Allows the mind to rest.

  • Promotes positive moods.

  • Helps restore clarity to the mind.

“Massage provides another therapeutic component largely absent in today’s world: tactile stimulation. What can loving touch do spiritually? Many people have reported cathartic experiences during a massage. As a therapist carefully unwinds a customer’s stressed and tired muscles, the therapist may also be unwinding the taut, pent-up emotions that one does not always have time to process during a hectic day. The feeling of being touched in a safe, caring, compassionate manner can powerfully remind the customer that he or she is not alone in the world.”
