Day 1 - Arrive in Bangalore

Arrive in Bangalore and transfer to the Woodlands Hotel, it has a great location near the modern MG Road, and an excellent plantain leaf restaurant.

Day 2 - Bangalore - ISKCON Temple

Leisurely breakfast at the hotel, then we visit the ISKCON Krishna Radha Temple, a magnificent modern temple structure designed to inspire you through chanting the Hare Krishna. Save room for lunch and sweets from the stalls inside.

Day 3 - Bangalore - Lalbagh Gardens

Breakfast at Malwari's Tiffin Room, a colonial building with historical portraits of the owner's family lining the walls, and a quick tour of the kitchen. After breakfast we will make a trip to the second largest garden in Southern India. Laid out over 240 acres there are over 1,800 species of tropical, subtropical, and medicinal plants. The afternoon and evening are free for visiting MG Road, shopping, or seeing a movie.

Day 4 - Bangalore - Maha Bodhi Society

Take a visit to a Buddhist Temple with a tree grown from a sapling of the origional Bodhi tree under which the Buddha gained enlighenment. After an english meditation session, we will take a local lunch down on Ghandhi Nagar Road and watch thousands of people scurry in and out of the train station.

After lunch we will begin the four hour drive to Mysore. When we arrive we will check in at the Siddhartha Hotel, relax for a while, and then walk downtown to see the Maharaja's Palace lit up by 50,000 light bulbs.

While Southern India is not known for a strong Buddhist connection, we will be visiting the Maha Bodhi society in Bangalore.






Day 5 - Mysore - Dosas

Dosas are a South Indian treat savored for breakfast and evening snacks. The best place for them is in Mysore. You’ll be amazed how easy and delicious they’ll be. After breakfast we will set off for Chamundi Hill, with beautiful views on clear days, and quite a pleasant little Durga Temple to visit as well. There is a pathway down to the Nandi, where our car will pick us up for the drive back to Mysore. In town we will get a local lunch and the afternoon is free for shopping, etc.

Day 6 - Mysore

Spend the day walking through town. Marvel at the brisk trade of silk, jewelry, and jasmin along the roads, and listen to the metalworkers bang out everything from intricate Ganesh sculptures to the small metal drinking glasses used for chai all across India. Scents, sounds, and sights of the Marketplace in Deveraja will inspire anyone to take up South Indian Cuisine.

Day 7 - Mysore - Yoga with Enzo

Mysore is home to Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, the grandaddy of Ashtanga, or dynamic yoga, but we will not be meeting him as his classes are month long affairs. Mysore now has many qualified instructors all around, and we will be doing a drop in class with one of them. Enzo, who used to teach with me at the Healing Hands Center has lived in Mysore for years now, and he also knows all the variations of the Ancient Massage for the ultra flexible.

Day 8 - Mysore - Maharaja's Palace

No visit to mysore is complete without a visit to this unique palace. Done in a fun combination of colors, designs, and stained glass, you have to wonder if the Maharaja wasn't a kid at heart.

Day 9 - Fort Kochi

Depart Mysore early morning and drive to Bangalore to catch a flight to Kochi. Transfer to bed and breakfast in Fort Kochi and wander into town for a seafood dinner.

Day 10 - Fort Kochi - Cooking Class

In the morning take a walking tour of the city and visit the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets lining the harbour mouth. These huge contraptions were introduced in the 14th century, and they are still pulling in little fish, and the odd large one, in the same way today. In the afternoon we will take a cooking class. Taught in english by the ever-friendly Maria, we will learn how to make fish moilee, a coconut milk fish curry, along with lemon rice and dahl.

Day 11 - Fort Kochi - Jewish Synagogue

Constructed in 1568, this is the oldest synagogue in the commonwealth. Destroyed in a shelling during the Portuguese raid in 1662, it was rebuilt two yeas later by the Dutch. The synagogue sports mid 18th century handmade, blue willow pattern floor tiles (no two tiles are similar) from Canton in China, a clock tower, Hebrew inscription on a stone slab and finely wrought gold and silver crowns) Also on display are the Greet Scrolls of the Old Testament and copper plats on which privileges were granted to the Jewish community by the rulers of ancient Kochi. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kathakali dance performance with dinner.

Day 12 - Fort Kochi - Houseboat Tour

Take a half day houseboat tour on Kerala's Backwaters. Stop at various traditional local sites, and enjoy a traditional lunch prepared on the boat.

Day 13 - Munnar

A trip to the mountain area of Munnar guided by Maria. She will handle all the cooking, so we can focus on taking a tour of the Tata tea estate.

Another day to enjoy the cool mountains.

Day 15 - Amma's Ashram - Varkala

Born in a poor fishing village in Southern India and educated only up to the fourth standard, Amma now directly administers a vast network of charitable activities, serves as spiritual master to thousands of monks and nuns, mother to millions of devotees across the globe, spiritual advisor to the international community of nations and religions, and protector of the true spirit of India's Sanatana Dharma.

If Amma is available, we will take darshan, or a hug, at her main Ashram.

Day 16 - Varkala

Arguably Kerala's best beach, Varkala is linned by a cliff lined with restaurants and shops. We will spend the day relaxing and watching the waves.

Day 17 - Trivandrum - Bangalore

Transfer to the airport for flights to Bangalore. Overnight in Bangalore

Day 18 - Bangalore

Transfer to the airport for flights home.

Kathakali

This traditional from of dance has been seriously studied and performed in Kerala for generations, and our group will get a taste of it in a full costume dinner performance.
